Bob Freed

began his hospitality career at Lou Walters’ World Famous Latin Quarter in 1954 and was promoted to maître d’ in 1957, remaining until the New York supper club closed on New Year’s Eve in the late 1960s. During his 15 years there, Bob witnessed generations of performers, headliners, staff, and celebrity clientele pass through its doors—and met his future wife, dancer Janie Thomas Freed, on her first day at the club in 1956.

After the Latin Quarter, Bob worked at several notable New York restaurants, including the Russian Tea Room and The Riverboat, before he and Janie acquired The Gatsby on First Avenue and 48th Street. He later spent 29 years in the wine and spirits business before retiring. Bob remained a devoted supporter of Janie and the Latin Quarter community throughout his life. Together they raised three sons, with their family growing to include many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
