From 1942 to 1969, Lou Walters’ World Famous Latin Quarter was a landmark of New York’s nightclub era, offering dinner and cocktails alongside lavish productions featuring major headliners, Broadway-caliber dancers, singers, showgirls, comedians and specialty acts, supported by accomplished producers, directors, choreographers and musicians.

Behind the spectacle were working performers whose careers moved between nightclubs, Broadway, touring productions, television and film. Singer John Hemmer, dancers Janie Thomas Freed and Chickee James Kulp, and their fellow entertainers kept this community connected long after the nightclub closed. Their stories offer a rare, first-person window into the people and working lives behind a largely vanished era of American entertainment.
