The Latin Quarter

From 1942 through 1969, Lou Walters’ World Famous Latin Quarter at 48th Street and Broadway was one of New York’s celebrated supper clubs, offering dinner and cocktails alongside lavish revues of singers, dancers, showgirls, comedians, specialty acts, and major headliners. It was a scale and style of nightlife that has largely disappeared.

In 1968, John Hemmer joined the cast of the Latin Quarter production Terre des Femmes as a singer and performer. More than another engagement, it introduced him to a close-knit community of entertainers whose friendships would remain central to his life for decades.
